I’m definitely an old school gamer who spent way too many hours during college with my butt on a couch and my hand firmly grasped around a controller developing sore thumbs. I love how far video games have come since then, as demonstrated by my Kinect for XBOX 360 post-game soreness a few weeks ago at the Dad 2.0 Summit. Let’s just say I earned those sore muscles, considering my friends could barely pull me away from the new Pixar Game, Kinect Rush.

I loved it so much, I hosted a Pixar Playdate at my place, inviting some of my kids’ friends to play for an afternoon. Let’s just say the moms loved it just as much as the kids.

Now I do my best to keep the licensed characters in our home to a minimum, but I admit to a weakness for anything Pixar. John Lasseter is a veritable genius, and I always feel like the studio’s films entertain parents too. This game is no exception.

Players pick from five cool Pixar movie-themed games, including Up, Cars, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and not surprisingly, Toy Story. But don’t expect to sit around; this being Kinect, you are the controller with the sensor tracking your motions. Which you’re going to have to run, jump, climb and more. It’s a serious, no-joke work out to play these games.

I love how some of the Pixar Rush games are competitive, like Cars, for example, while others require cooperation between players. Of course as with any game, this can be a bit challenging if you’ve got kids at different ages and skill levels. But overall, it’s pretty cool that kids are playing both separately and collaboratively to help their favorite characters.

The more you play, the more levels, skills, and other surprises are unlocked, making this more than just a one or two-off type game. In fact, if your kids are anything like mine, you’ll have to drag them away from it. Which, given how much it wears them out, isn’t such a bad thing. –Kristen
