We’re upgrading to the new iPad and thinking about passing along our second-generation iPad to our kids. Do you have any suggestions for kid-friendly cases? -Krissy

Hi Krissy, lucky you for getting a new iPad! Your kids are probably already foaming at the mouth at the prospect of getting your old model. And while you may notice don’t recommend iPads as toddler “toys” or buying young children technology of this magnitude (and expense), if you’re handing down an older generation, protecting the device is an essential way to insure that initial investment.

Here are some great kid-friendly iPad cases that can withstand the occasional (and inevitable) slip or drop. –Jeana

The SuperShell from M-Edge (above) is made out of a super-density kind of foam that absorbs shocks and drops from those slippery young hands. There are openings to accommodate all ports, speakers and cameras on the iPad 2 and new iPad, and it provides a textured grip so that said shocks and drops are a little less likely. Fun colors, too. ($34.95)

Speck’s iGuy is also made out of sturdy foam and as you can see, is shaped like a little man. Kids can stand him on his feet for movie watching, or grab him by the arms and carry him along. This case fits with all iPad models–but do we really need our personal gadgets to be even more appealing to very little kids? ($39.95)

The iKid, a case from Kickstarter, makes the iPad appear nearly indestructible with its thick all-around bumper protection. The nifty handles around the case make it easily grabbable from all sides and thick enough that those toddler hands can get a good grasp on it. If the developer (a mom of a toddler) is able to raise enough funds to continue production, the iKid will begin shipping next month. (Price TBD)
