Even with the busy holiday season here, I’m bound and determined to set aside some personal time for momma to keep me sane. For me, that means reading a lot more. Like, a lot more. So I’m really excited about the ebook subscription service Oyster. We’ve reviewed other ebook services, and they all seem to be great in their own ways. What’s really impressed me with Oyster is that they have lots of books in their library that I actually want to read.
Oyster charges you a monthly fee of $9.95 a month, which gives you unlimited access to their ebook library. So if you’re a voracious reader–or even if you just read a book or two a month–you’ll love this. Among the growing list of publishers already on board are HarperCollins, Houghton Mifflin, Workman and Rodale, which means there really is the good stuff here. In fact, there are more than 100,000 titles.
And to answer your question: Yes, you can read offline. You only need an internet connection to download a book in the first place.
They spotlight new books with categories like literary debuts, “rough around the edges,” political satire, and thoughts on food. But they also have extensive selections in all the traditional categories like history, fiction, business, and sports. And while there isn’t a category for juvenile fiction, teens will enjoy many of the books, and you might even find some they need for school here. (And I did happen to see Curious George.)
The design is absolutely lovely and the interface clean and intuitive which makes it a joy to read through Oyster. Even if you’ve been reluctant to take the plunge into ebooks. A gift subscription also makes a terrific gift for the holidays.
