It’s officially spring and that means in-season veggies are back. I can’t wait to make that first batch of pasta with fresh basil leaves in it, but the thing is that requires an indoor herb garden right now. And every year I try to grow herbs indoors, is another year they die on me. (It might have something to do with the fact that I forget to water them, but I’m not one to point fingers.) That’s why I was so intrigued by the Click & Grow Smart Herb Garden which is inspired by, of all things, NASA technology.

This has to be the easiest way to grow herbs. The starter kit comes with three pods containing soil and seeds—basil, thyme, and lemon balm. You simply “click” them into the smart garden, fill it with water, and plug it in.

The smart LED light operates on an 8-hour timer then turns off. And it’s super bright, but still safe for young eyes. Which is great, because my kids are obsessed with checking the status of the seeds.

When the water level gets too low, you’ll be able to tell because the floating water-level indicator will clearly sink down. But this only happens once every 5 weeks or so. In the meantime, the Click & Grow technology gives your seedlings just the right amount of water, light and oxygen needed to grow into beautiful herbs. It’s so, so easy.

We checked into whether the seeds Click & Grow uses are organic. The company says that they are fans of pure food and don’t like anything even remotely GMO, but they have added some minerals to their soil. These minerals are chemically the same as what’s in most organic fertilizer, but they can’t officially be called organic in all countries. In short, I feel good enough about it to eat what we grow. That should be in another month or two. Yay!

The Click & Grow Smart Herb Garden starts shipping this week for $99.00. Thanks to Click & Grow for sending us a sample to test for review consideration.
