Kidizen app: For buying, selling, and coveting gently used kids’ stuff.

Online consignment for children’s clothing isn’t exactly new. We’ve shown you sites like ThredUp and Swap Mamas. But now there’s the new Kidizen app that makes quick (and financially savvy) work of buying and selling kids’ clothes, toys, and gear in a socially-driven online consignment shop. And it’s got some interesting features and benefits that you might want to check out.

You may have that pile of too small kids’ clothing somewhere in your house like me;  mine is in the laundry room waiting for me to do something with it. And while I feel fine donating most of it or passing it along as hand-me-downs to the cousins, there are some pieces that I feel guilty throwing in the rag bag so this is definitely the kind of app I was interested to learn more about.

The interface is really intuitive and the entire premise is smart. I like that when you sell an item, you get to keep 90% of the purchase price, with 7% going back to Kidizen and approximately 3% going to PayPal, who exclusively handles the financial transactions. As a comparison, ThredUp gives you a maximum of 80% of the purchase price, and The Real Real, which focuses on designer clothing for women, gives you 70%. So 90% is pretty sweet, and without a website to maintain, it probably keeps down the overhead for the moms who started the service.

If you are a seller, you can quickly photograph your item on your phone, upload it to the network with price and details, and keep track of your transactions in your own shop–all right from your iOS device.

But if you are in the buying mood you’ll find that not everything is for you, but there’s certainly a lot of amazing deals. You can set up your profile so that you separate each of your kids and their sizes, allowing you to filter your feed to see just what you’re looking for. In addition, you can follow friends–that’s the social component–and really, any of your favorite Kidizen shops, like the one that has that beautiful toddler dress you keep coming back to.

This is such a timely idea for both buyers and sellers of children’s clothing, since as we know, kids don’t stop growing ever. Plus it’s a great option to help teach the reduce, reuse, recycle lifestyle. All while putting a little extra cash in your pocket.
