As someone who works on the computer all day, I’ve got my various methods for keeping distractions at bay, aka “How not to check Facebook every four minutes to see who liked the photo of my daughter’s artwork.” But if you’re like me, then you know that sometimes just closing the tabs and logging out of your email is not enough. Which is why you might want to check out SelfControl.

This free Mac application (sorry PC users) is a no-joke way to ensure you stay focused because it allows you to block access to distracting websites, your mail server, or whatever it is on the web that you want out of your reach for a certain period of time.

SelfControl app helps you block certain websites on a timer so you can get work done

Once you download the app to your computer, you just pick the sites you want blocked, set a timer, and then press start. Until that timer goes off, you will not be able to access those sites, even if you restart your computer or delete the app or do whatever it is you think you can do to undo it. Talk about serious business!

Now it’s certainly not for everyone, because sometimes you do need a break, and clicking mindlessly around the Internet can help. But if you’re looking to streamline your work flow and up your productivity, or maybe you’ve got a tween or teen that needs a little extra assistance staying focused, think of this as your own personal drill sergeant. Just with less yelling.

You can download SelfControl from the App store on your computer or on the web.

Thanks Wesley
