What parents need to know about the Roblox app, a Minecraft alternative that makes it easy for kids to chat with strangers. Eep.

You might have heard about the app Roblox, a multi-player Minecraft alternative that’s making the news because kids are unknowingly chatting with adult strangers. And getting propositioned. Just read what sort of chats this dad discovered his son was getting. Gross. Related: What parents need to know about Whisper app What’s the deal with the Roblox app? Turns out, it’s a pretty widely-known app that’s popular with Minecraft-loving kids because it’s so similar to the original game, allowing kids to create worlds and interact with other kids (or so they think). But, when I asked my 12-year old daughter about it,...

How to get started on Minecraft PE: One newbie parent’s intro into the square world

Of course I’ve heard about Minecraft. How could I not? The crazy best-selling, square-loving video game is practically everywhere and has been for years now. I also knew the super skinny basics on Minecraft: It’s all about virtual, 3-D worlds engineered by players using square blocks. Like building with LEGOs, but on a screen, and square. Plus, there’s a dude named Steve, a cute, friendly pig of some sort and some semi-cute, totally un-friendly zombies. But that was kind of where my knowledge ended. Now, as a mother of a 6.5-year-old kid, I knew I’d need to know more about Minecraft...

Web Coolness: First female Minecraft character, big news from Instagram, and a selfie arm that’s freaking us out

Here are some of our favorite links from around the web this week. We hope you enjoy them as much as we did.   We’re geeking out over this Star Wars coffee table that also happens to be a pinball machine. What?! Finally, the first female Minecraft character is here. We’re a little obsessed with Microsoft’s #HowOldRobot. It guesses your age based on your photo, but um, don’t be offended as it’s not super reliable. (Editor’s note: Kristen did get 23, however, so… YEAH!) This selfie arm might just be the most disturbing thing we’ve ever seen. These geeky...

Minecraft launches the first girl character. And she’s just as handy with a pickaxe or a bucket of lava.

My girls are obsessed with Minecraft. As in, Marble Jar-level obsessed. And yet, for some reason, Mojang hasn’t quite embraced the girls who have embraced Minecraft with any female characters. Until now. Tomorrow, they’re rolling out Alex, the first female Minecraft character who actually looks vaguely female considering the 8-bit animation. Or at least she doesn’t look like like a Steve skin, only with long hair. Alex doesn’t “have eyelashes” which my daughter noticed at a very early age was what defined female animals on cartoons. But she does have reddish hair, which is kind of like her favorite Harry Potter character,...
