Why yes, you do need this app for free last minute Mother’s Day ecards

I’m a big fan of ecards for holidays, and I have yet to find a better, easier resource for last-minute ecards than the Red Stamp app. With Mother’s Day just a day away, get on it! Surely there’s someone you’ve forgotten — a mom, stepmom, mother-in-law, grandmother, aunt, best single mom friend — or just someone you want to flood with some extra love this weekend without spending a penny. In which case, you can bombard them with gorgeous, free ecards by text or email, choosing from dozens of customizable modern designs, and even uploading your own photos to many of templates. This...

The deadly Blue Whale online suicide game targeting teens: Is it a hoax? What parents should know.

We all issued a collective gasp around here this week, reading about the online game called Blue Whale, A.K.A. The Suicide Game. And of course right away I was hoping it was a big hoax. When I checked out the details, I was kind of hoping it was some awful teen-focused version of Grand Theft Auto — but that would be a step up. In fact, it’s a more like a real life version of a Black Mirror episode. What is Blue Whale? Reportedly, teen users are asked to download the game, then perform a new task as instructed for 50 days....

A free photo effects app that turns ordinary shots into works of art

As someone who is definitely not a pro photographer, I’m all about the photo apps that help make my snapshots…let’s say, a little more artful. That’s why the Prisma photo effects app (iOS and yes, Android) is my latest photo filter app obsession, and if you’re not yet in the fast-growing Prisma fan club, well, join us! If you’re kind of over crema, juno and inkwell, there are more than 60 filters on Prisma that can turn even an admittedly average, poorly lit photo of my daughter, above, into something resembling a Mondrian, a Monet, a Münch or a Miyazaki. And a whole lot more....

A smart handbag you unlock with a fingerprint? Want!

When I think of a smart handbag, my mind goes to looks. But in the case of the FYB London Smart Handbag, billed as “the world’s smartest handbag,” it’s a combo of chic designer styling and useful technology that land it on my covet list. First of all, it’s got a biometric lock. As in, you can only unlock the bag iPhone style, with your fingerprint. If that’s not like the best ever bag for NYC subway commuting, I don’t know what is. On top of that, there’s a wireless charging pocket to keep your phone charging on the go and a...

Got internet trolls? Troll Cakes kill them with sweetness.

I can’t stop laughing at this concept: It’s called Troll Cakes and yes, it’s real. The premise is that you send Brooklyn baker Kat Thek any hateful message you’ve received — Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat — and they will send them a cake with their own words written on it. They’ll even track them down for you if possible, for a fee. Let the let them eat cake jokes fly! Of course while the idea is hilarious, I’m not sure I have the pressing need to send a pricey cake to the next no-life troll who fills his days writing MOM’S R STUPID COWS on social media....

The new Polaroid Snap Touch with LCD: Is this insta-digital hybrid camera worth it?

After spending some time playing around with the new Polaroid Snaptouch ($179.99 from our affiliate Amazon) that we were sent for review, I think it’s a fun little camera for a family — especially with road trips, summer camp, and more outdoor time ahead. That said, there are a few caveats I want to offer. It didn’t take too long for my 9 year old to figure out how to use the touch screen to take, save or trash a photo; then play around with digital effects like borders, type, and a few sticker options before printing. And showing off...

Big (real) news! Fake news gets easier to spot with the new Google Fact Check

It seems like an April Fool’s joke (and yes, I double checked the date on the post) but at long last, Google is taking moves to quash fake news with a new Fact Check feature in Google Search and Google News, worldwide. So basically, Google Fact Check is not itself fake news. That’s a relief. According to the recent post on the Google blog, publishers can now enable a “Fact Check” tag in Google News which will mark as news those articles that have been fact-checked by publishers and respected fact-checking organizations, like Politifact,  FactCheck.org and Snopes. It even includes fact-check sites like Climate...
