Edible Instagrams? We’ll take it!

At first when I heard about an edible Instagram product I thought…InstaGrahams? But nope. No clever puns. Just beautiful, delicious chocolate. The new service Cocoagraph, from 3D Fine Arts major Rae Vittorelli, merges chocolate and photography–two of our favorite things too–turning any of your photos at all into all perfectly edible, artisanal chocolate. You can send a jpeg or scan, but of course Instagram and Hipstamatic photos will work too, and the vintage filters on them probably lend themselves to better quality of the final product. Not that it will be around long enough for you to stare at...

Piquing Our Geek: Turn your iPhone photos into Polaroids. Remember those?

I still fondly remember my Polaroid camera. Like so many photo buffs, I was devastated when Polaroid went the way of the Betamax. Well, with this new gadget, you will get almost the same effect with your very 21st century iPhone. And the story is pretty unbelievable. The folks behind the Impossible Instant Lab were so obsessed with instant photography that they bought the last Polaroid factory in order to preserve all that instant film. (Kudos!) Since then, they’ve been working to create a gadget that uses Polaroid-compatible instant film that lets you turn your digital photos into actual analog Polaroid photos,...

7 Funny videos for moms that are actually funny

I get pitched a whole lot of “funny videos for moms” here, and while I know humor is wildly subjective, the one thing they all have in common: not so funny. In fact, some are downright painful. (Yes, poop is gross. Very original) So as a public service, I thought I’d put together a few videos for parents that actually did make me–and a lot of other people laugh. And I don’t mean babies farting or kitties falling from trees. Here’s to the online humor writers who make good comedy on purpose. Fair warning: There are a few ads...

Flash Cards for techies, design nerds, and other types due to conquer the world any minute

I remember an entire six years ago (whoa) when we discovered this set of Nerdy Baby alphabet flashcards. At the time, there was nothing like them. I mean, who thought of M as anything but Monkey or maybe, if the set was really inventive, Maraccas. But Mandelbrot Fractal Set? Hello? Now there’s another set of Nerd Flashcards designed by Emma Cook which is a little less science oriented, and more for computer mavens and online design geeks. You know, the kind who sees the letter K and thinks of Black. Naturally. I suppose you could print and trim them...

Putting other hula hoops to sad, dark, dismal shame

File this one under “for the kid who has everything” — unbelievably, outrageously, way super cool LED hula hoops. If it weren’t for the splurgey price, I’d snatch up a few of these rechargeable LED hula hoops  immediately. Should you need a little justification, the price just dropped by $110 on the double-circuit hoop shown here. Or you can do a semi-splurge and go for the single circuit hoop. Or hey, just file it away for the holidays–there has to be someone in your life who doesn’t own one yet, right? They can all be made to order with...

One more reason to go Spotify: Radio on the go

We’re already serious Spotify evangelists around here–this streaming, social music service is changing the way so many of us find and listen to new music. And the finding part is important, especially post-parenthood when I realized that sadly, seeking out new artists was kind of low on the priority list for me. Now with today’s announcement, there’s one more reason to jump on the train: free mobile radio. If you’ve got the free Spotify iOS app (sorry Android folks; hopefully yours is coming soon) for iPhone or iPad, you can now get unlimited access to radio as you can...

Unblock Me – You’ll be fighting over it with your kids

Recently a smart reader recommended the Unblock Me app when I was looking for something new to play around with, and boy was she right. What I didn’t realize however is the educational value for kids. Unblock Me is a series of outrageously addictive puzzles that it turns out are doing wonders for my 6 year-old’s logic, problem-solving, and spacial relations skills. (To say nothing of her ability to share. Ahem.) The goal is to slide the blocks around until you clear a straight path between the red block and the exist. It sounds easier than it is, and...

Colorforms comes to the iPad. (Yay, Colorforms!)

As a huge Colorforms fan as a kid (really, who wasn’t?) I squealed when I learned they had turned that clever little design and creativity toy into an iPad app. And what an app it is. The Colorforms Revolution App (wow, mighty big promise there) is developed around the same basics as the original colorforms, but with lots more ways to play with it. There is a lot to do here with both easy and hard levels, so both my preschoolers and my nearly seven-year old are fighting for a turn. That’s a win, in a way. There are...

Surviving the lines at Disney World? Undercover Tourist is the app for that

This past weekend, I got through four fun-filled days at Disney World and emerged relatively unscathed from the perils of long lines and the whining that ensues on them. In part I have to thank the temperate weather, but I owe a huge debt of gratitude to the free Undercover Tourist Disney World app which I couldn’t have lived without. The Undercover Tourist app for Disney World is seriously a godsend. While it has a lot of helpful features, the most useful are the up-to-the-minute, accurate wait times for every ride and attraction. If you’re in Fantasyland, it can...

Computer printer storage in a most surprising space

Not all of us have a huge house with a separate office and loads of room for computer gadgets. So speaking as a city-dweller, I was blown away by this hideaway printer storage idea at PB&J stories. Whether your home office is a teeny corner of your bedroom, or you simply don’t want to have a giant printer out on display in the living room, I think this is pretty brilliant. Of course you don’t want to be hacking up your Roche-Bobois bureau, but if you’ve got an IKEA Hemnes dresser or even something scavenged from a tag sale,...
