Love apps? Why not marry them to your home decor.

I dug these end tables right away when I saw them on Design Milk  — vaguely mid-century lines, clean design, nice contrast between the natural wooden legs and the black or white top. Basically, my furniture style to a tee. Then I took a closer look and realized whoa, the tables are actually inspired by the shape of iOS app icons. Thus, you can see why it’s called the app side table, which in this case means applications (like Candy Crush), not appetizers (like candy). (Okay, so candy is an appetizer in my world. Sometimes.)   One other way you definitely know the app...

Superheroes sleep in an 8 bit bed

I usually stay away from licensed characters when decorating my kids’ rooms, but I might have to make an exception for this awesome pixel duvet cover from Society6, featuring a lineup of cool pixelated superheroes. We’ve raved before about all the artsy duvet covers at Society6, and pixel decor is a current hot trend. It’s so fun to see them come together in a way that any superhero-loving kid would dig. And although a lot of the characters are easily recognizable, the design is subtle and cool. Such a great way to satisfy both kids and parents on the...

Pixelate this.

With 8 bit making a comeback (thanks, Minecraft) and pixels starting to appear everywhere as a “new” art technique, it’s not surprising to see them make their way from our desktops to our countertops and beyond. I’m seeing them on all sorts of housewares and decor lately, I especially love them in bright colors that add some modern pop to your home decor. Here are a few favorites from a little pixel fun to a serious decor commitment.     At the MoMA store, I noticed this awesome looking tempered glass Pixel cutting board which can help expand counter space if...

Take me (way way) beyond the moon with NASA’s vintage space posters

While regular people are dreaming of walking on Mars’ red surface, you can be dreaming about strolling on Kepler-186f’s red grass or pretending you’re Luke Skywalker on the real-life version of Tatooine with one of three printable vintage space posters of newly discovered planets in our solar system. Created by NASA’s visual strategists, Joby Harris, David Delgado and Dan Goods, the trio of eye-catching posters pay homage to the Golden Age of Travel from the first half of the 20th century. But instead of promising such exotic adventures as riding elephants in the Orient or seeing the glaciers of Alaska aboard a luxury...

It’s a bunny! It’s a bear! It’s a super cute computer desk for kids.

One of my New Year’s resolutions this year is to get my kids their own homework spaces so that I’m not asking them to clean their notebooks and backpacks off the kitchen table while I’m in the final stages of dinner prep each night. In my search for desks, I came across the new mobile, height-adjustable computer desks for kids from ACE Baby Furniture which offers peace, quiet and plenty of space to work. Despite the manufacturer’s name, this is a smart, tech-ready computer desk and workstation for kids who are old enough to have homework and use a laptop, but young enough that they’re not rolling their eyes at the simple, modern, animal...

Cool artwork for girls who have heroes too.

Sometimes it feels like there aren’t enough strong heroes for girls in TV and movies for my own daughters to look up to, which is why I love how artist Scott Park has illustrated 80 phenomenal female heroes and put them into in his spectacular Hall of Heroes poster. Talk about a broad list? Wow, I can’t even name them all. We’ve featured lots of very cool artwork for girls, like these strong princess posters and gender-reversed fairy tale prints but I’m loving the diverse group of women in this poster.  It’s got so many of our recent favorites that girls will easily recognize, like Elsa from Frozen, Eva from WALL-E;...

FurnishUp: Design your dream room right from your computer

There are quite a few virtual decorating online resources that allow you to place your virtual furniture in your virtual home to get a sense of what it will look like. We’ve liked SketchUp, NousDecor, and even the awesome augmented reality decorating app from IKEA. But I don’t think I’ve had as much fun–and been more inspired to shop–as I have been playing around with FurnishUp, a brand new site in beta that describes itself as like playing with the Sims, only with real furniture from cool modern brands. If you want to bypass the registration just to check it out (that bugs...

As if you haven’t dissected Star Wars enough already

Seeing as how our friends at Think Geek are having a big sale right now, I was poking around for what must-have (I use that term loosely) I’ll come across, and wouldn’t you know it? I found a contender in this set of stackable Star Wars mugs that made me laugh out loud. In the real sense, not the hyperbolic texting acronym sense. The site describes it as kind of like that time Chewie try to put C-3PO back together (and regretted it once he started talking again), only here we’ve got Luke, Han and a Stormtrooper all together. I could easily start...

Vintage patent drawings take artistic geekery to old heights

If you’re looking for a super cool geek gift, well, we tend to have plenty around here. And now I’ve found one more, with the incredibly creative vintage patent art from RetroFoto on Etsy. The vintage camera patent drawings are just such an awesome thing for your favorite photographer, whether it’s a turn-of-the-century camera, a 1933 movie projector, or a 19th century tripod design. You can order each one in a choice of backgrounds, whether you prefer the black chalkboard look, a creamy vintage page, or a cobalt architectural blueprint. The rest of the shop is pretty wonderful too, including...

Buh-bye ugly outlets, hello LivingPlug Inlets.

Anyone who’s been through childproofing knows that outlet covers leave much to be desired. In fact, outlets in general leave a much to be desired. And so the makers of the LivingPlug’s INLET came up with a clever way to change that, as you might have guessed from the name. And I’m kind of geeking out over these outlet hiders with plates that coordinate to your decor. You might too, even if you have no plan to childproof anything. (Lucky you.) LivingPlug totally reinvents the outlet with an attractive adapter you pop right in to convert your two-pronged outlet to a three-prong outlet. All of the...
