71 of the best science, environment and climate accounts to follow on Twitter, from federal orgs to rogue scientists

For the last week, I have wanted to put together a list of the best science accounts on Twitter focusing in particular on climate and the environment. But wow, there are so many good ones, that it’s like I couldn’t stop. In fact, there’s no way I could have listed them all. So I hope you’ll see this well-considered list, which ranges from federal organizations to non-profits, individual scientists, environmental and climate advocates, and even rogue or “alternative” Federal agency accounts, a terrific place to start. Particularly if you’re a fan of facts. (Me? I’m a big fan of facts. Just speaking for myself...

Earth Day 2015 picks: 5 cool tech gadgets to get you excited about solar power

It’s Earth Day 2015, and this is always the time we stop and think of ways that we can save energy — and money — in our everyday lives. One of the trends we’re really starting to see blow up, at last, is the use of solar power. There are so many smart products out there, and they’re getting even more affordable, accessible and truly useful for everyday people. When we’re out and about, we’re even seeing solar-charging laptop backpacks on the shoulders of people you’d least expect, so it’s clear it’s catching on. And that’s a good thing.   So we’re happy to...

Solpro takes solar chargers to a whole new level. And speed.

I’ve seen no shortage of solar chargers, many of which we’ve featured here on Cool Mom Tech. But the new Helios solar charger from Solpro that we discovered at CES 2015 lets you charge smarter and waaaay faster. Yep, the new Helios only needs 90 minutes in direct sunlight to give your smart phone one full charge. That’s crazy fast, though it probably varies a bit depending on your phone. Still, nothing on the market comes close to that right now. To get the max out of the Helios, which is equipped to charge up to two USB devices at a time, it...

TZOA: A wearable to measure air quality and help you breathe easier

Don’t laugh, but I rely on frequent deep breaths to get me through the day, especially when my kids are being especially ornery. And thanks to a really cool gadget to measure air quality called TZOA, I can see if those calming breaths I’m taking are full of clean air. TZOA (pronounced Zoa, silent T) is a Kickstarter campaign offering the first wearable environmental tracker that measures both air quality and UV rays. Cool, right? We have covered tons of awesome wearable gadgets, but most of them have involved fitness tracking or baby monitoring. So it’s really cool to see wearables going in the direction of monitoring the environment. Especially if you consider...

Juse: The solar powered mobile phone charging case we’ve all been waiting for.

We have covered hundreds, if not millions (Okay, probably not millions) of mobile phone cases over the years, and loads of mobile phone chargers too. But this super cool Indiegogo project I just learned about named Juse is the first solar-powered mobile phone charging case ever created, and it if does what it says it will do, it very well may get rid of those pesky charging cables for once and for all. Not to mention saving money and being a bit kinder to the earth. Juse looks to be an amazing tech accessory that relies on–you guessed it–solar power to keep your...

WHOOSH Screen Shine : Best screen cleaner evah?

Finding the best screen cleaner is top of the list for us parents, since our gadgets are so irresistible to our kids. Despite having tested, reviewed, and recommended screen cleaners right here on this very website, I always seem to have enough fingerprints on my laptop screen and any given iDevice to make strangers wonder whether I’m lying when I say I only have two children. I have seriously grossed out more than a few persnickety art director friends who think I’m insane to be able to work this way. So I recently dug out a sample bottle of WHOOSH Screen...

Solarpod Buddy portable charger review: Is it worth it?

The idea makes perfect sense: a portable, high performance solar charger for my smart devices that — best part — is actually compact enough to carry around. That’s the gist behind the Solarpod Buddy solar charger. It sounds kind of new-age and earth-loving, and I was excited to give the compact rechargeable battery a try. On paper, the Solarpod Buddy Portable charger felt like one more solution to add to our list of smart tips for dealing with the dreaded dead smartphone battery sitch, giving an electrical boost to your tablets, game consoles, and other small appliances without the use of the...

Cool light bulbs get even cooler with the Nanoleaf Bloom

Last year we discovered the Nanoleaf LED light bulb which, besides looking super cool, actually is. It’s a safer alternative to CF bulbs, projecting light 360-degrees like a traditional incandescent while saving money and energy. The one drawback, as I noted, was that they didn’t work with dimmer switches. And now, behold! For they’ve added a smart new feature to it with the new Nanoleaf Bloom in that it dims without even requiring an actual dimmer switch. As a total dimmer fan (mood lighting dontcha know), it’s so smart. Just use your regular old on/off switch. Flip it on and it starts to ramp...

A bluetooth keyboard carved just for you

I love the juxtaposition of high and low tech that comes with wood tech accessories and wooden gadget covers. But this wooden bluetooth keyboard takes the cake. Made to order from a single piece of maple or walnut, the Oree Board from Oree Design on Etsy is one of the prettiest tech gadgets I’ve seen. And clearly, the best looking bluetooth keyboard by far. It really is a fully-functional keyboard that works with any tablet, smart phone, or computer that is bluetooth-enabled. Of course, handcrafted wooden tech gadgets custom made just for you in France are not necessarily budget-friendly,...

The safer, smarter future of light bulbs is here: The NanoLeaf LED light

Everyone know knows the benefits of compact fluorescent light bulbs–longer burn time, less energy costs, more effeciency. But now with increasing concern about UV radiation and mercury emissions–especially when they break–and so I’m beyond happy to see a whole new light bulb option hit the market that could absolutely change the world. The brand new NanoLeaf LED Bulb could indeed be the future of lightbulbs. Yes, they look totally different than any bulb you’ve seen, because that outside is actually a printed circuit board. However they still project light 360-degrees like an old-fashioned incandescent bulb with a nice warm...
