I’m sure I’m not the only one who has grabbed a hairbrush and sang the haunting lyrics of The Verve Pipe’s The Freshmen into it. But you may be surprised to learn that this rock band from Michigan has a more playful side, as evidenced in their most excellent A Family Album.

Though this CD definitely shows a tender side of the band that I hadn’t known before, my favorite song and today’s download recommendation happens to be the one that rocks the most.

Be Part of the Band starts off quiet and sweet but quickly gets cheeky as it encourages kids to rebel a tiny bit with their guitar and drums. In imparting their knowledge to the younger set, The Verve Pipe leaves out the part about touring the country in a broken-down van or getting paid in beers for a gig. But this is a great song to get you all playing air-guitar (or air-keyboard, air-drums), but maybe not when you’re doing the driving.

The line that cracks me every time is the end to each chorus: But don’t get a manager just yet. Sage advice for the next generation of rockers, I’d say. –Christina

  1. how did you know i was just looking for new music for a long car trip with the kids! this is awesome!

  2. LOL…I think it’s totally ironic that a band who could bring something as dark as The Freshmen into the world would do a kids’ album. I’m intrigued.
