Woody Guthrie would have been 100 years old this summer, so it seems fitting that we pay our respects to his legacy. CMP favorite Elizabeth Mitchell has more than done his music justice with her gorgeous children’s CD Little Seed which features a baker’s dozen from “America’s musical bard”. And one of my favorites from this tribute is the title song which closes out the CD.
Beginning with some beautifully haunting violins, Little Seed starts softly, growing more lush as it goes along, until it swells to encompass multiple voices and instruments.
The lyrics tells the story of a little seed growing. As a mama, it’s impossible to hear this and not think about my own sweet little “flowers” who seem to be growing before my eyes. I blame both the lyrics and Elizabeth Mitchell’s gorgeous voice for the tears that spring into my eyes every time I hear it. –Christina
