When I tried on the brand new Sol Republic Headphones at a holiday press preview recently, it was love at first listen. If you like the Beats by Dr. Dre style of headphone but could live without the headphones-or-car-payment price tag, you’ve found your cans.
CEO Kevin Lee is actually one of the masterminds behind the Dr. Dre line
at Monster before starting his own line with his partners, so the comparison is apt. For just $59.99 you can grab the in-ear headphones
which impress at any price. Comfy, too. But the real star of
the line are the Sol
Republic Tracks Headphones which deliver amazing sound for under
$100.
They’re essentially the first interchangeable on-ear headphones that let
you mix and match cables, speakers and headband–should you be feeling
red one day and white the next. They’re sleekly designed, remarkably comfy and lightweight, and I
could really see getting through a whole plane ride in them without my
ears turning purple.
Plus they’re not gihugic, which is nice for those of us who don’t need
to sit around the subway wearing earphones that tell everyone HEY I’M
WEARING EARPHONES.
If you’re considering headphones for a gift, the sound quality will
appeal to even those music snobs on your list. Plus as a parent, it’s
great knowing they’re made of some crazy new polymer that makes them
“virtually indestructible” when you bend them just a little too far. I haven’t tested them with a destructive toddler just yet
but I’ll take their word for it. –Liz
