I heard a collective sigh of sadness when news of the death of Davy Jones, lead singer of 60’s pop-rock band The Monkees, started working its way across my Twitter feed.
And while there are some lovely covers of The Monkees’ songs (take a moment for this pretty one from
Renee & Jeremy), as well as the original songs to share with your kids, this week I couldn’t resist sharing something different and awesome.
Check out this duet he did just a couple of years ago with kindie artist Billy Kelly.
Me and My Brand New Haircut from Billy Kelly’s Is This Some Kind Of Joke? starts of with the familiar snip-snip sound of scissors. It then bops off into a happy-pop ode to that nice new-haircut where you walk around waiting for people to say, “oh, I love your haircut!”
Yes, this would be perfect to play a few times before taking your babe for his first visit to the barber’s chair.
Throughout the song, Billy Kelly and Davy Jones playfully sing and banter with each other, sounding great together as they deliver such lines as “I change my mind.” “I change my underwear almost every day.” To which Davy Jones replies wryly “Too Much Information“.
And along with grabbing a download of the song, I highly recommend you spend a few minutes watching the totally
adorable music video. As a child-fan of The Monkees, it made me so happy to see Davy Jones still having so much fun making music. –

RIP, Davy Jones. Thanks for the memories and the music.
