It’s every parent’s worst nightmare to think of a child going missing, but the reality is, it’s not a bad idea to be prepared for worst case scenarios. The FBI just recently launched a free app called Child ID that lets you do just that.
So, does it make sense to download it?
You can add profiles for unlimited numbers of children and include a photo, physical characteristics, identifying markers and nicknames and have it on hand to immediately send to local law enforcement agencies. You can also call 911 and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children directly from the app. That’s the good part.
The bad part is that there is no password protection on the app. Surprising, given it was created by one of the most secure agencies in the world. There are also “tips” for keeping your kids safe, but they’re so elementary (don’t leave kids unattended, tell them not to accept things from strangers) there was really no point in including them. If you can get past the security, (or lack thereof, which I’m guessing will be amended with a forthcoming update), or aren’t so worried because you already use a security code to get into your phone, this app may provide some peace of mind.
