Whether you’re headed over the river and through the woods this Thanksgiving, or you’re just trying to get things ready for the big turkey dinner without tripping on a hungry kid, there’s a smart new U.S. geography app that is so much fun, your grade-school kids may not mind doing something educational on their day off.

Geography Drive USA app for the iPad is a brain-stretching game that will test your child’s knowledge of the good ol’ US of A. Make no mistake: These aren’t all softball questions and require more schooling beyond knowing how to abbreviate New York.
Before getting started on their little road trip, your child can customize their own car—and up to three kids can have their own game which is nice for us with multiple kids.
As you go along and earn money for your correct answers, you’ll be able to upgrade to a fancier car than the starter sedan. But, you’ll also have to pay for gas, so don’t blow all your cash on that snazzy hot rod.
Have a child who likes to be prepared? Have them go first to the Visitor’s Center where they can take a virtual tour of each state via flash cards full of information. Before you take this app for a test spin though, keep in mind that a lot of the content will need to be read by your child, so it’s best suited for kids who are reading on their own.
What makes this more than just a trivia app though is that it is really fun; just ask my two kids who spent over an hour doing something called the Honolulu Spelling Bee. And although it’s not an inexpensive app—at $4.99 it’s one of the priciest ones we own—we’ve only scratched the surface of all there is to do here. I think the educational content will make this a worthwhile purchase down the road.
And don’t be surprised if you kick them out of the driver’s seat after a little while. I had a lot of fun taking this for a spin on my own. –Christina
