At Toy Fair this week, I was totally entranced by the Light Stax Electric Light Blocks, sort of a Lite Brite-LEGO mashup that you just can’t stop playing with. They stack on a USB or DC-powered base (or use batteries if you like needlessly spending money) which creates a circuit to automatically light up the bricks as they connect. The final artwork on display was absolutely impressive, from company logos to geometric sculptures, skyscrapers, or favorite cartoon characters recreated in glowing blocks.

In the close-up you can see just how the Light Stax work; then check out some of the cool ways they were configured at Toy Fair. Are your creative wheels spinning?

The main issue for me: the price. Oof. It’s $40 for 36 building blocks at Uncommon Goods. So I’d say a small set could be enough to keep a kid happy. But if you want a big, 250-brick glow-sculpture to serve as cool nursery decor, a funky night light for your child’s room, or even some conversation-piece artwork in your home or office, get ready to lay out a wee bit more cash.
