I was compelled right away by the new Today clock by designer Scott Thrift, which is on its way to a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign. Right away you may notice a few things are missing from traditional clocks — like minute and second hands. The designer’s aim was to create a clock that simplifies your day, breaking it down by hours and reminding you of the relative speed of time, all with the aim of subtly inspired you to make more of each hour.

Or as he puts it, stretching your perception of time to make space for all of the things in life that cannot be counted.

Lofty goals Perhaps. But I like it. A lot.

The time of day is also reflected by the lovely gradient background, which turns the day simply into daytime, night and dusk.

Now obviously this isn’t going to help with screen time management, or getting the kids out of the house in the morning, when toothbrushing must start at precisely 7:32 and bedmaking at 7:37 or the yelling begins (actually we recently shared a clock to help parents with that very thing)  — but for my bedroom, I love the sense of calm it gives me.

Hey, as a busy parent, anything that helps me get a little more zen with my anxious time-checking while maximizing the hours in my day is a great thing.

Preorder the  Today clock by Scott Thrift on Kickstarter with a pledge starting at $88 by July 1, 2016 for the Bamboo Desk Clock which is estimated to retail for $148. Shown above: The Steel and Glass Wall Clock which requires a $158 contribution and will retail for $200. Shipping is estimated for December.
