If you’re forgoing the fancy dinner tonight and staying in for Valentine’s Day like us, I rounded up 7 of my top romantic movies that are ready for streaming via Amazon Instant Video, on your various gadgets. (Roku, anyone?) Because as we all know, Valentine’s Day is about making your lady happy. Whether you’re normally a rom-com fan or not. So grab some popcorn–and chocolates of course–snag a cozy warm blanket, and cuddle up on the couch. If you can bear it, turn off your phones too.
Crazy I know, but that passes for very very romantic these days.
You hardcore fans probably prefer the Colin Firth mini-series, but we lightweights love the 2005 movie with Keira Knightly if only for the gorgeous scenery, which includes Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy. (Rent: $3.99 on Amazon)
I shouldn’t really need to say more than “Ryan Gosling’s abs” (don’t be jealous, guys) but it really is a sweet, funny movie that you should both enjoy. And a reminder to Hollywood that romantic comedies can still be awesome in the 2010’s. (Rent: $1.99 on Amazon)
If you’re more of an indie fan, this is a classic for us Gen-X parents, and really one of the most well-written romantic movies out there. Not surprised considering Richard Linklater is behind it. Plus, vintage Ethan Hawke is wonderful. (Rent: $2.99 on Amazon)
4. Notting Hill
You can’t help but fall in love with travel book store owner Hugh Grant in this movie (forgetting what you may know about him in real life) plus Julia Roberts kind of playing herself, along with the wonderful British ensemble cast. Remember Downton Abbey’s Earl of Grantham before he was an Earl? He’s here too. (Rent: $3.99 on Amazon)
5. The Holiday
Granted, this movie, like Love Actually, is set over the Christmas holiday (thus, the name), it’s one of my all-time favorite romantic movies with a great ensemble cast including Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Jack Black. (Rent: $3.99 on Amazon)
6. The Notebook
Anyone who knows me probably expected that Ryan Gosling would make my list twice. As cheesy as this movie might be (our editor Liz begs to differ with this pick), I really do love the story. (Rent: $3.99 on Amazon)
There’s just something about vintage Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan that lights up the screen. And you may have forgotten, but the soundtrack is like another character in the film. (Rent: $3.99 on Amazon)
If you’re all like, “But where is Princess Bride? And Sixteen Candles? And When Harry Met Sally?” don’t worry. Here’s another list of romantic movies for Valentine’s Day for you to peruse too.
