Editor’s Note: We’ve updated this post with new information we received regarding the changes to Picnik.

You might have been as surprised as I was to learn the news that Google will be closing down Picnik, the go-to photo editing site for thousands of users. But there are a couple bits of good news to go along with this announcement that I think will make you photo editors happy.

First, while Google is shutting the Picnik site down, you have a couple of options for saving your photos. You can either use Picnik Takeout, which will conveniently zip all your photos for easy downloading to your computer. Or you can copy all your photos and store them on Google+ (for those of us kinda wondering what the heck Google+ is good for these days). This makes a lot of sense since so many of us are sharing photos on social networks anyway.

But even better, you can get Picnik Premium free until April, which is when Picnik will be officially shut down. That means all their advanced controls, easy edits, and cool effects are completely free, at least for a few months. Now that’s what we call a parting gift. -Kristen

Head over to Picnik asap to get your free Premium upgrade while it lasts. And for those of you wondering where to turn now, may we recommend Snapseed, which is available both for desktop and as a mobile app.
