I recently learned a tip: Waking up and beginning your day looking at Facebook and Twitter can start you off on the wrong foot. Between the political fighting, the depressing news, the spam and the trolling…yeah. Not necessarily the first thing you want to see in the morning. Instagram, however, can be a joyous respite from all that. If you’re following the right people, there are feeds that can make you happy in an instant. Just know that I’m kind of old school with my IG. I tend to favor people who share their own photographs–at least most of the time–and don’t muck up their...Read More

Around here, we’re all starting to wonder whether TV will continue to be relevant to our kids who are growing up in the age of online media. In fact, next to playing Minecraft, my tweens’ favorite way to spend their screen time is watching videos of their favorite artists on YouTube. But if you’ve ever looked at the comments, even on the most benign, age-appropriate YouTube videos, you understand why it makes parents crazy. If you listen to this sh*t, you are dumb, gay, and retarted. Nice. Related: 10 questions parents should ask when writing a cell phone contract for kids So if you’ve...Read More
One of the reasons I love Twitter is because it really does give you the most up-to-date real time updates, and with the huge impending snowstorm 2015 headed my way, it makes it super helpful to stay on top of the weather. Parent translation: how much bread, milk, eggs, and other french toast ingredients (ha) I need to stock up on and how long my kids will be out of school. As you probably guessed, there are a bajillion Twitter feeds tweeting about the snowstorm, so I narrowed it down to the best Twitter feeds I’ve found that offer the most helpful weather updates. I hate to admit it but with the automatic addition of the emoji keyboard with the iOS8 upgrade, I have finally given in to the emoticon and emoji bandwagon. With some limits of course. Of course Emoticandy, as far as I’m concerned, gets a pass no matter how you feel about those little graphical icons. From the family-owned Raley’s Confectionary and available for purchase at Mouth (man, we love them!), these are a fun, geeky stocking stuffer if I ever saw one. All those beautiful little hard candies are made by hand using only natural food colors and organic sugar (so it...Read More
Oh how we love Talk Like a Pirate Day each year. And clearly the folks at Facebook too. If you want to change your whole Facebook page into Pirate-speak for the day (or you know, forever), so that a like becomes Arrr and events happen at Septembarr 20 roundabouts 11:00 in the evenin’, it’s easy. At the very bottom of your page, in grey, is a link that refers to your language – like English (US). Click on that and you’ll see a full list of other languages including English (Pirate). Click it. That’s it! Go back to the site, and...Read More
I’m a planner: I like knowing what I want to get done, and when I’m going to do it. But I’m also a sucker for dreamy design, so it’s no surprise that I’m smitten with The Timeline Project, a new way for women to visualize your future. Developed by Bayer Health Care, The Timeline Project helps you generate goals, set a timeframe to achieve them, and document your plan in a pretty timeline that’s all perfectly designed for sharing on social media. For each goal, you can choose from six life categories, like lifestyle or health or civil engagement, and then...Read More
What happens when 14 young designers put their heads together to figure out how to promote IKEA’s newest furniture collection? The highly-innovative IKEA PS 2014, that’s what. It’s the first fully-functional, interlinked web site on Instagram. Yes, that Instagram. And you thought that IG was only for over-filtered selfies and dimly-lit food pics. Russian ad agency Instinct came up with the idea, and it’s pretty darn cool; the Instagram account operates like you regular web site, with 12 image tabs displaying different product categories–benches, textiles, lighting–as you would see in a catalogue. But the websitey-ness comes into play once you select on...Read More
We spend a lot of time on Twitter. Maybe too much. But between our personal accounts, and @coolmomtech and @coolmompicks, all of us here definitely get to see our share of brand outreach. Not just to us directly, but to other folks on Twitter too. And the truth is, a lot of PR folks, brands, and small business owners could still use a little help with their technique. Or a lot. Getting ignored is one thing; but you don’t want to inadvertently offend the very people you’re pitching. Or worse, be reported for spam and lose your entire account. If you’re using...Read More

As we well know, Pinterest can be a wonderful source of information and inspiration; we provide lots of it ourselves. But the lack of great search functionality can make it a tad overwhelming, especially if you’re not entirely sure what you’re looking for. Fortunately, the new Pinterest Guided Search feature on the Pinterest app could help keep you focused and on the right track. Interestingly, the new functionality is only on the mobile app, not on the website. The goal of Pinterest Guided Search is to deliver the most relevant pins, by offering search term suggestions that help steer and refine...Read More
